Course description:

Learning Outcomes/Objectives: At the end of the course, Students should be able to: Understand the basic policies of urban infrastructure planning; Differentiate between Facilities and Amenities; Know the method of collecting data on need and requirements of urban population on infrastructure. Understand different planning procedure in investigating public utilities and services in urban area. 

This course includes the following lecture themes: This course has the following thematic areas to be considered: 1. Meaning of urban infrastructure (Facilities and Amenities) 2. Planning consideration and design standards for public utilities and services 

such as drainage, water supply electricity, telephones, sewage etc. 3. Design criteria and threshold population required in the provision of 

infrastructure in a neighbourhood. 4. Methods of investigation for planning for utilities. 5. Management principles for public utilities and services. 6. The city as a system of services designed to support optimum functioning of 

the city. 

Methods of Instruction: 

  1. a) Lecture b) Tutorials c) Field Work d) Design studio 
  2. e) Term Paper and Seminar Presentation) 

Methods of Course Assessment: Evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the university policy. The lecturer will present a written course outline with specific evaluation criteria at the beginning of the semester. Evaluation will be based on the following: 

Criteria Marks Design Work 20 Term Paper 10 Semester Examination 70 Total 100 

Pre-requisite courses: URP 312: Planning Studio III (Introduction to Urban Design) URP 322: Planning Studio IV (City Centre Design)
